Woodstock '99 kicks off tomorrow, so I posted some shots I took at Woodstock '94. This year I'm taking the Pay Per View option. Here is the Woodstock Running Order.

More shots have been added throughout the Africa area. All the latest additions are scans of the 35mm shots Lori took.

Saw "American Pie" last night and it is hilarious. In the fine tradition of such 80's romps as "Porky's" and "Last American Virgin", Pie has some outrageously funny and original moments in its timeless exploration of guys trying to get laid. I thought the script and acting was surprisingly strong. It is second only to "South Park" in my list of must sees for the summer.

Speaking of 80's cheese. Thursday July 15th's Hair Ball show featuring LA GUNS, GREAT WHITE, RATT and POISON was way more fun than it should have been and surpassed all my hopes for the day. Dee Snider of TWISTED SISTER fame was even on hand as a Master Of Ceremonies - and I got his autograph (thanks Jenn!). Each band sounded great and put on a tremendously energetic show. They sets were all greatest hits collections with no band forcing more than one new song on the very appreciative and drunk crowd. Time has even made my heart grow found for the dreaded power ballads that MTV used to play every ten minutes. All four bands jammed together on a cover of "Rock & Roll All Nite" and all four drummers took part in Rikki Rocket's drum solo. LA GUNS, long one of my favorite bands now has Jizzy from LOVE/HATE (another of my favorite unappreciated bands) on lead vocals. They tore through a 30 minute set featuring some of my faves - "Sex Action", "Electric Gypsy", "Never Enough" and their token ballad hit "The Ballad of Jane." I was never a big GREAT WHITE fan, but they were impressive live - playing "Rock Me", "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", and more. I've seen RATT a few times before and they were excellent, pretty much playing their Greatest Hits album. Finally POISON came out and I was shocked to still know every word to every song; "Look What The Cat Dragged In", "I Want Action", "Nothin But A Good Time", "Talk Dirty To Me", "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" ... - even crap tunes I never liked such as "Unskinny Bop." CC Deville even made fun of what a total mess he became (see VH1 Behind The Music for sordid details) and kept asking the crowd if they still liked him. I lied and said yes. Say what you will about them, but they sure are fun live. After screaming out every tune for all four bands my voice has yet to recover.

Next weekend is Woodstock '99!!

The TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS show Saturday was fantastic. Petty is one of the people I've been meaning to see for years but never made it to. I will now being seeing every future tour. The sound was great, the band seemed to be having a blast and the set was full of classics. The show started with a rippin' version of "Jammin' Me", then on to "Runnin' Down a Dream", "Breakdown" (Yeah!), new tune "Swingers", the classic "Don't Do Me Like That", a slowed down version of "I Won't Back Down", "Listen To Her Heart" and tons more. Petty didn't waste much time with chat or solos -- just kept chuggin thru songs. His only break was during a Heartbreakers jam of surf rock instrumentals showcasing guitarist Mike Campbell. The 2 hour + set included a new song sung by Campbell, "I Don't Want To Fight", as well as; "You Got Lucky", "You Don't Know How It Feels", "Good To Be King", "Free Girl Now", "You Wreck Me", "American Girl", "Refuge" and a jam filled cover of Van Morrison's bar band classic "Gloria."

The next must see movie of the summer is The Blair Witch Project. - www.blairwitch.com.

Well MÖTLEY CRÜE were awesome once again. Check out my review of the show and also some online flare ups between Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee. New page added to Africa land. Off to TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS this Saturday.

July 6, 1999
Well July 1 was my birthday and instead of spending the weekend working on the site as I had promised the cyber citizens of the world I went truck shopping and put a deposit down on a brand new 2000 Nissan Xterra. Also saw the South Park movie and it is the most hilarious film I've seen in years. This is The MUST SEE of the summer - I won't say anymore to ruin it, just go see it now! Anyway more shots pop up in the Africa section daily - but I still have a ton to go. Seeing the SCORPIONS and MÖTLEY CRÜE tonight -- no Tommy Lee but should still be great show.

Well we're back from our safari in Kenya, and it was AWESOME. I was going to take some time and build a killer site with the hundreds of pictures we took, but for the past couple days I've been harassed via phone, email and even on the streets with shouts of "where are the pictures!", "update your site". So here you go, unveiled before its time www.afgrant.com/africa. Many more shots will be added -- so I don't want to hear any bitching!

Posted shots of the KISS "Got Milk" ad and Paul Stanley as the Phantom. Getting ready for my trip to Kenya - lots of pictures will be up when I return at end of June.
The winner of this summer's worst concert tour title is "Rock Never Stops", which has been stopped. I had tickets to see "Rock Never Stops" with TED NUGENT, QUIET RIOT, and SLAUGHTER on June 29th in Lowell Ma - but its been canceled. At least I still have MÖTLEY CRÜE/SCORPIONS, TOM PETTY and POISON & RATT to look forward to.

Concert Review - This past Friday, April 9th, I had a ticket for Monster Magnet, HOLE & MARILYN MANSON. Unfortunately the only bands who actually played at the Worcester Centrum Centre were NASHVILLE PUSSY & MARILYN MANSON. At first I feared that the best thing about Nashville Pussy was their name - but they have tow hot (at least seemed that way from my seats) chicks on the band, one of them is a 6'4" bassist. The only time the band got a decent response from the crowd was when the two girls started to make out while jamming. Mmmm.... 6'4" Nashville Pussy (Click here for some shots I found).

Manson had one of the best intros I've ever seen. He was crucified on a cross of televisions which rose up from the stage. A few songs later the cross burst into flames. This was the second time I've seen Marilyn and I was again impressed by what a good live performer he is. The band was very tight, Manson's voice was strong and the crowd was full of great freaks. They did all my favorite tunes - "Reflecting God", Irresponsible Hate Anthem", "The Beautiful People", "Dope Show" and much more. A fun satanic night was had by all.

Also finally made it to "The Matrix" - awesome flick, combines "Dark City" and "The Terminator".

Well I haven't done much with this site lately. In an effort to change this sad fact I'm going to start posting more of my personal news/rants, with this being the first. Most of my recent web attention has been on my Angry Johnny site - go check it out, I'll wait for you.  There is a lot of new art and the Angry Mall is open for your mail order business. Saw Angry Johnny and The Killbillies last night in Worcester Ma. It was an awesome show and I discovered a great new band The Drive-By Truckers. For more of a write up visit Angry Land.
Tonight -- its Holyfield vs. Lewis for The Undisputed Heavyweight Championship of The World. (update: The Fight Sucked)

In upcoming event news
I'll be going to see HOLE & MARILYN MANSON on April 9th in Worcester Ma.  I've also been planning my upcoming June vacation to Africa - and yes I know about the tourists who were recently killed there. That just makes it all more exciting to me. Tons of photos and an online diary will be posted after the trip. Also just around the corner will be an update on the adventures of my German Summer Metal Intern.

Its gonna be a rockin' summer
The 1999 OZZFEST lineup has been announced and will include the farewell tour from BLACK SABBATH as the group plans to disband permanently after OZZFEST to focus on solo projects.

The tour will include ROB ZOMBIE, SLAYER, and the DEFTONES as well as PRIMUS, GODSMACK and SYSTEM OF A DOWN. Second stage acts will include JUDAS PRIEST, NASHVILLE PUSSY, PUYA, PUSHMONKEY and the unsigned bands FLASHPOINT and APARTMENT 26.

According to Hardradio.com in late May, POISON, RATT, CINDERELLA and GREAT WHITE (or DOKKEN) hit the road for a sixty-date, cross-country tour. Plus a TWISTED SISTER reunion and tour is in the works. I must have died and gone to 80's heaven. -- later AF
