Motley's coping with a Crue cut
Friday, July 2, 1999
By ED CONDRAN
Special to The Record
Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx doesn't speak in endearing tones when the subject is Pamela
Anderson Lee, the actress and on-again, off-again wife of former Crue drummer Tommy Lee.
"Tommy's old lady doesn't really like me or any of us," Sixx said by phone from
his home studio in Los Angeles. "Me and Tommy could never figure it out."
After spending 18 years behind the Crue drum kit, Lee has left the rock-and-roll circus
for one of the world's most popular pinups and their children. The lanky, tattooed
percussionist, who quit the band in April, will continue to make music. Sixx said Lee's
new work will be dramatically different from the Crue's metallic, three-chord rock.
"Tommy is set on going in a different direction," Sixx said. "This whole
thing was so surprising and disappointing. I know he's been through a lot of drama and
trauma with his family and he wants to make that work and that's fine. He doesn't want to
play rock music anymore and that's fine. He wants to make dance music and hip-hop. He also
might make an album like Limp Bizkit, but that's not rock-and-roll.
"I'm not going to stop him because we're friends. I don't want to make him tour and
record with us and make him hate us. He can sit home and make a Korn-sounding record if
that makes him happy. If his old lady doesn't want him on the scene with us, that's fine.
Sixx, isn't ready to shut the door on Lee, who is still featured in the band's publicity
photos.
"You never know what's going to happen," Sixx said. "We've all had great
years and great memories with Tommy. We love working with him. In the end, if the thing
with the woman doesn't work out they always come back to the band."
In the interim, the Crue, which reunited with vocalist Vince Neil in 1997, is on tour with
new drummer Randy Castillo.
"Randy wants to rock-and-roll," Sixx said. "He's a perfect fit for us. He's
going to help make this upcoming tour great."
The Crue's jaunt, which is primarily composed of the band's hits, stops tonight at the PNC
Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Sixx is excited because he believes the general public is
ready to re-embrace rock-and-roll rendered by groups that know how to entertain onstage.
"I think people are sick of the [alternative] bands that got so big during the early
Nineties," Sixx said. "When you look back at these bands that came along, they
just did the opposite of what we do. Their idea was to bore everyone to tears. Watching
these bands was like watching paint dry. Screaming Trees. Please!
"Now I think rock-and-roll is about to get cool again and Motley Crue is right there.
... You hear people say, 'Hey man, your rock-and-roll is dumb.' Who said it's supposed to
be anything but that? Rock is a boxing match with guitars. ... It's not reinventing the
wheel. Let the Chemical Brothers reinvent the wheel. There are only so many notes you can
play and we play enough of them."
By October, the Crue will release a live album titled "Entertainment or Death."
The group, which also includes guitarist Mick Mars, hopes to finish a studio disc by early
next year. Both titles will be released on the band's Motley Records.
"It's a golden time for us," Sixx said. "We have our label. We own our
masters. ... It's all coming together for us. That's what I tried to tell Tommy, but he's
off on his own trip. While he's doing what he's doing we're making some incredible things
happen."

Hey Nikki!!
I have a great Idea!...........If you don't have anything good to say, Please don't say
it! You and your wife have no good reason to be talking with forked tounges. Maybe just
stick to talking about yourselves, Or saying no comment!! You and the rest of the world
don't know what kind of Hybrid record i'm making. It's all your opinion, not fact!! You
and your wife are the last people on the planet i would expect this from.
Thanks
Tommy
